Wheelchair Assessment For Enhanced Mobility and Comfort

If you are a wheelchair user or have been advised or referred by a doctor to start using a wheelchair, then wheelchair assessment is a vital and critical part of your journey.
That’s simply because there is no “one size fits all” strategy when it comes to wheelchair use. Every person’s situation is absolutely unique and deserves the utmost consideration.

Wheelchair assessment requires
attention to detail.

For example, not only should we take into account your mobility, body measurements, physical condition and muscle strength, we also need to perform a holistic assessment of your lifestyle, living conditions including altitude changes and adjustments, how hectic your daily routine is, how much you travel, how often your family and friends are available to help you, and so forth.
In addition, and naturally, ensuring your safety is one of our top priorities in the wheelchair assessment. We treat every case with the seriousness and particularity that it deserves. Because keeping you moving (and moving well) is what we love to do!

Our Wheelchair Assessments

We perform key assessments related to the following kinds of wheelchair use. Please note that ultimately, we can perform the assessment about what kind of wheelchair suits you, only once you come in for a physical appointment. We kindly request that this general information below should not be substituted for an actual wheelchair assessment. Your safety is our top priority.

Power Chairs

Power chairs are a good solution for those who find self-propelling impossible, extremely difficult or damaging to their health (e.g. it may be too taxing on your cardiac health), and feel pain or paralysis in their upper body/arms. A power wheelchair uses a motorized base to move you so that you don’t have to physically exert yourself, but can still stay mobile and live life to the fullest.

Manual Wheelchairs

If self-propulsion is not as much of an issue and ease of transporting the wheelchair is essential, this can be a good option. We make the assessment based on a number of other factors including your upper body strength, muscle strength and tone. We focus on ensuring your maximum seating comfort and easy, smooth everyday mobility.

Scooters

In cases where upper body mobility is not severely compromised or difficult, and/or there is a great deal of outdoor use, pavement, and rugged terrain, scooters can be a better option. We make the assessment based, again, on a thorough analysis of your body strength, measurements and lifestyle, to determine what is exactly right and comfortable for you.

Your Wheelchair Use Should Always Be…

Entirely Comfortable

When you sit in or slide into your wheelchair, it should feel like putting your feet into the world’s most comfortable shoe.

We aim to make your regular wheelchair use just as comfortable, with no awkward angles or soreness.

Suited to Your Lifestyle

It’s your life, and your daily mobility needs depend so much on what your day-to-day routine is like. We do not treat you just as a body upon whom we perform an assessment. Our assessment is holistic, incorporating all the information that’ll make your wheelchair suited to you.

Boosting Your Mobility

The whole point of the wheelchair is to augment your mobility. So if you get a wheelchair that’s a hassle to navigate, that can be a really difficult and frustrating situation. That’s why we work diligently to make sure your mobility is 100% facilitated by your chair.

Horizon Physical Therapy provides you a holistic wheelchair assessment for optimized comfort and mobility.
